This course explores the critical role of occupational therapy in addressing cognition and executive functioning deficits across the neurological population. Participants will examine the distinct domains of executive functioning and differentiate how impairments in each domain impact occupational performance. The session emphasizes the unique, occupation-based lens of OT in evaluating and remediating cognitive dysfunction to support meaningful participation in daily life. Attendees will develop targeted, evidence-informed treatment strategies tailored to common cognitive deficits and learn how to structure effective, functional intervention sessions. Guidance will be provided on selecting appropriate standardized and non-standardized assessments to inform clinical reasoning and goal development. The course also reviews relevant CPT codes commonly used in cognitive rehabilitation to support compliant and defensible billing practices.
Participants will receive practical handouts, including an “Organize the Hour” treatment session planning template, sample short- and long-term goals, and memory strategy resources that can be immediately integrated into clinical practice. The session encourages clinicians to strengthen both their therapeutic approach and documentation processes to optimize patient outcomes and professional accountability. This course consists of approximately one hour of lecture.
